Community Outreach

The Community Outreach Committee (COC) was formed in 2005. With a primary mission of promoting awareness and understanding of Down syndrome, the COC has supported Wisconsin families through the following:

Presentations:

Compassionate Care Training (Presentation for Medical Professionals):

  • Mercy Medical Center - Oshkosh (January 2005)
  • Aurora Medical Center - Oshkosh (January 2005)
  • St. Joseph’s Hospital - Milwaukee (August 2006)
  • 20th Annual Pediatric Progress Conference (Wheaton Franciscan) - Milwaukee (March 2007)
  • Aspirus Wausau Hospital - Wausau (September 2007)

Understanding Down Syndrome (Presentation for Day Care Providers:

  • Milwaukee County Special Needs Program - November 2006, March 2007, March 2008, March 2011

Family Support:

  • Fond du Lac Birth-3 Program (Presentation about DSAW to families) - May 2007

School Support:

  • School District of Superior (Presentation about Down syndrome to paraprofessionals) - August 2007

Distribution Projects:

  • Revised New Parent Packets distributed to hospitals throughout the state - October 2004
  • “We’ll Paint the Octopus Red” books distributed to hospitals throughout the state - October 2004
  • “Taking Down Syndrome to School” books distributed to schools throughout the state - October 2005

Hospital, School, and Library Outreach:

  • Sent letters offering resources and assistance throughout the state - October 2006
  • Presentation to Curative Genetics Department at Children's Hospital of WI - January 2011

Current efforts:

  • DSAW Info Meetings and Workshops
  • Workshops in partnership with the Down Syndrome Clinic of WI

Future projects:

  • Development of educational transition packets
  • Teen and adult outreach
